Howdy all,
So back in June my Mum took Elizabeth and I out for high tea, Have to say it was a really great day. If you're in Melbourne go and checkout the new Emporium and visit The Tea Salon it was lovely.
Anyway we are sitting there having a wonderful tea and my Mum says "Look at those holders, they're just old plates, someone drilled a hole in and put them together."
Which immediately had my mind ticking, so I said "I'm going to make some". Except later I decided I would like a bowl instead of three plates.
So I had these out in the garage.
I bought a diamond tipped, DRY drill bit. Most people recommend the wet ones, but I would prefer not to have an electronic drill and water, call me crazy but I don't need free electro therapy, then again it might help. I drilled a hole in the centre of each piece. Be warned though, safety google are a must and the ceramic gets burning hot.
For some stupid reason I drilled from the patterned side on this one, don't do it, it caused crazing around the hole, drill from the back.
I bought the metal holders on ebay I think they were $2, don't quote me on that, but it was around that price.
They easily screw together, each side has little foam spacers to protect the dishes.
Give her a clean, then Bob's your uncle, she's done! Really easy and very pretty.
DIY Delight or Disaster? These sell for $30, this cost me around $2, if we count the drill bit which can be used again then about $15, still half price. I'm making up a few more for Elizabeth to have High Tea parties with her friends, because let's be honest there is no better way to gossip than over a good cuppa at afternoon tea. Total Delight!!!
Thanks for reading,
Mel xo
Mel, that is such a great project and yay for you for seeing it and then making it! I love those pink dishes too! I bet Elizabeth is beside herself with this one. Total delight and maybe my favorite project of yours so far! Maybe... You have so many great ones!
ReplyDeleteOh I love this! Those dishes are so adorable! And I can just imagine it all filled up with little cakes for tea :) Really great project Mel!
ReplyDeleteYou did an amazing job and I love your choice of dishes. I have to say my sister made me one of these but in blue about ten years ago, and it is always pulled out when company comes and has held up over the years. A real treasure.
ReplyDeleteI am totally digging this, especially your choice of pattern, the bowl is a clever and unexpected touch. And yes, Bob IS my uncle.
ReplyDeleteLove it Mel! Those dishes look so sweet together. The thing I love about tiered stands is that they can be taken apart and stored very easily. This project is a total delight.
ReplyDeleteYou rock my dear. That truly is awesome!! I so love how inexpensive it is and the wow factor it has!
ReplyDeleteOh I love this! I always think I don't have enough serving dishes for little nibbles when I have guests over and this would be the perfect thing. Thinking about buying a drill bit..
ReplyDeleteD.E.L.I.G.H.T ... It looks fantastic Mel! And you made it look easy!
ReplyDeleteI love the soft pink colors too.
First of all, how FUN that you girls went for tea together. We have a few tea houses, and I've always wanted to go, but it's all about coffee usually in these parts. Secondly, I think it's really cool that your Mum is starting to zero in on potential DIY projects for you. This is so pretty Mel. I would think they would be so cute in a boutique for smaller sale items. So many ways these would be handy. Delight!!
ReplyDeleteI've seen these before, but I like the way you used a bowl on top. Love the pretty dishes you used as well. So pretty in pink!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Vicky
Mel. I LOVE this. The stash you had in your garage is so sweet, pretty and feminine. I adore this so much. Thanks for your tips about how and where to drill :). Sometimes it pays to make a mistake because it helps give great directions to your readers of what to do and not to do. This is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteSo sweet, Mel ! Great idea to use a bowl and not another plate :-)
ReplyDeleteGo you with your power tools! The dish looks great I can imagine it filled with dainty cakes and cucumber sandwiches :)
ReplyDeleteWow, so pretty! What do you search for on ebay to find those parts?
ReplyDeleteTotally a delight. I didn't even know you could drill through glass. I'd be skeered to do it. ;)
ReplyDeleteThis is so adorable Mel! Love the pink dishes! You come up with the best ideas!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you pulled that off for just $2. It's outstanding and I need to follow suit!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty, now I really cant wait to pop over for high tea and a gossip ;) xx
ReplyDeleteAnother pink project for the Pink Lady. Did you wear those fabulous pink boots. Love this stand, but thinking I would probably break the plates while drilling. This may be crazy, but how do you find the center of a circle?
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to try a project like this, but didn't know where to get the hardware. Thanks for the tutorial! And thanks for linking up to Make It Monday, our new link party!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty! I've only ventured as far as super glue but you make the drilling sound pretty easy. Might have to try that on my next project. Thanks so much for sharing at the Make it Monday Party! Hope to see you again next week :)
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! visiting you from Take-A-Look Tuesday :)
ReplyDeleteI really love that you used a bowl on the top with this!! And it is very sturdy the way you put it together!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing ;)
This would be adorable for a jewelry holder/stand. Pinning!
