Six Scarves To Make As The Weather Cools Down

I like scarves! Since I started blogging its become blindingly clear that I really like scarves and I've made a few over the last year and a bit, now that the weather is cooling down on the other side of the world I thought I'd put together a collection of scarves you can make to keep that weird frozen white stuff from chilling your neck. Click the photo's to be taken to the tutorial.

Silhouette Scarf

If there is one thing I know about kids, it's that they're kind of vain! Seriously show me a kid who doesn't like to see their name, I doubt you can! So I upped the name thing with Elizabeth's head on this scarf.

I seriously love all those silhouette crafts but couldn't think of anything to do then I made Elizabeth the Silhouette Toiletry Bag  and she loved it. All the girls on camp apparently wanted one and she was thrilled and said what else can you make? Challenge accepted but I had no idea. Then when I was making my Easiest Patchwork Blanket I had a piece of minkee left over that was just the right size for a scarf.

Wanna make one?

Supplies:

Minkee or is it Minkey? I don't know! Cut to desired size
Cotton Fabric cut same as minkee
Black Cotton
Sizzix Big Shot  (Optional)
A picture of your kid, side on profile
General sewing supplies

Sew minkee and fabric together, right sides facing and leave a gap to turn right way out. The close gap and topstitch all the way around.

Using the photo trace around the head onto the Heat'n Bond Ultra Hold Iron-On Adhesive. I used Ultra because you don't have to sew it. I would wash it on gentle cycle or in a pillow case but seriously now fiddly sewing, oh YEAH!!!

Iron it onto the back fabric and cut it out.

Grab your Sizzix Big Shot and cut out your letters using your Lifestyle Crafts Jump Rope 4-Inch by 4-Inch Alphabet Die. You could also embroider the name.

Iron it on your scarf.

Bob's your uncle one silhouette scarf! Bob in fact was my grandfather so that's a really stupid saying!

DIY Delight or Disaster? Umm me likey!! It's such a fun and simple thing to do but a huge impact and she loved it. Her friends want me to make them one. I think you could even buy a scarf if you're not keen on making one and do it with some tween girls as a craft night. Or they could put their head on one side and their BFF on the other. Although knowing girls that could be a dumb move, they tend to argue. On the whole I am calling this one a delight.

I know I am already a million times behind on the silhouette thing but is it truly over, or am I bringing it back like Justin Timberlake brought sexy back?? Either way I like it!

A Quick Knit Cowl

Well can I just say, I loved Trash Chic Week, I think it is something I will be sure to do again. Nothing like pulling things from the trash and trying to come up with another purpose for it. On the other hand it's also nice to work with some pretty yarn and make something nice and quick.

A wonderful blog friend of mine decided she really wanted a pretty cowl and who am I to say no?

So using a ball of yarn and my humongous size 20 needles I knit as follows

Cast on 15 Stitches
Knit first row
Pearl second row
Continue pattern until desired length
Cast off on a knit row

Sew in the ends and there you go one lovely cowl.

DIY Delight or Disaster? If I didn't have 90 million scarves, I'd make one for myself, I hope she is delighted!

Ruffle lace scarf

Morning All,

The awesome folks at Wholeport sent me some of their beautiful lace. Not being a sewer of clothes I was a little unsure as to what I was going to do with it. I was cursing the fact I could knit but not really sew, and thought I wish I could knit this. That lead me to thinking about fabric yarn so I thought hmm maybe I can.

Here's how I made it.

Supplies

1 Yard of lace  - found here
rotary cutter / mat
large quilting ruler
size 2.5mm knitting needles
very sharp scissors
an overlocker (serger)

Cut into approx 7.5 cm strips (2.5 inches) but don't be too concerned if they don't all match up that's the fun of the ruffles

Join strips together with an over locker (serger)

Over lock one side of the lace

Then cut a hole big enough to fit the knitting needle though at around two inches apart, on the side that was not serged (overlocked) - I eyeballed this again the ruffles are forgiving.

This knits up in the same manner as my yarn ruffle scarf using the same pattern

Just keep going until the length suits you. The prep work is the longest part, it knits up very quickly.

There she is.

You can also dress it up or down with some pretty accessories

Ahhh romantic ruffly goodness!

Wholeport has a huge selection of lace and lace trims, you can see them all here.

Necklace Scarves

Boring title right!

Well don't worry about that because I have the coolest scarves that anyone can make.

How and how rude no greeting, so G'day.

I saw these on sale for $30, I wondered how much I could make one for, worked out at around $6 each, score!

These are so easy, you'll want to make heaps. Perfect last minute Christmas gift.

So here we go

Suppiles:

  • Scarf
  • Necklace Bail
  • Necklace Beads (Bail and Beads can be found on etsy, ebay or you might get them in craft stores, I haven't seen them in my local)
  • Beads & Findings

1. The hardest bit, shove the scarf through the bail and slide it to the middle.

2. Add the beads either side.

3. Pick your bling/beads, I used split rings because they're easy to work with - no tools! I chose a locket to be all sentimental and stuff.

Include a pic of your most favorite child here - it's empty because they all annoy me are loved equally

TA-DA your done.

Make another and have your teenage son model it for you because you can not figure out how to take one of yourself (Okay I lie, I'm behind on laundry and discovered all my bras are either in the wash, hamper or on the line. Not the day to be modelling scarves!)

DIY Delight or Disaster? Delight, the pics are a bit of a disappointment, they're actually really cool. Plus depending on how you do it, you can swap the bails and have different kinds of bling. I was really happy with this so Delight.

So what's the verdict other than I am the worst housewife in the world?  Which by the way, I'm okay with, I love being a Mum, I hate being a housekeeper.

Thanks for reading, off to do the flippin' laundry,

Mel xo
