Vinyl & Paper Bags...aka Physical Proof I Lost The Plot!

Sometimes I have great ideas and sometimes those ideas turn out to be so ridiculously stupid I even wonder what I was thinking. This one however I am placing a little blame on Martha Stewart.

A few years back I started maternity leave and had no idea what to do with myself, I hadn't been home in years and so flicking through the tv one day I stumbled across Martha. From day one I was hooked, watched it religiously every day. Then one day this girl came on and made a wallet out of vinyl and scrap book paper and I thought it was the most awesome thing I had ever seen. Enter 4 years later and I have a stack of paper and find myself with some vinyl.

Gathered up my stuff, I actually forgot to chnge the needle and found I had wasted my money, my didn't need a special needle

Cut my paper and vinyl.

So carefully sewed right next to, but not touching the paper.

Then had to turn the thing inside out....anyone foresee what happened, because I sure didn't!

The paper crinkled and looked terrible. Determined I tried multiple ways of getting this to work and they all looked terrible!

DIY Delight or Disaster? Oh so bad and I kept at it and at it, I even went and bought more vinyl attempting to get this right....Disaster!

Do you have any of those things that just turn you into a mad woman and yet you can't stop trying despite it being obvious it's never going to look like what you pictured?

Thanks for reading,

Mel xo

  1. I think they still look cute. But, I know what you mean about keeping at something until you get it. I'm like that too. :)

  2. Okay - I totally do not think they are a disaster!!! But I know exactly what you mean when you keep at something even though you know its not going right and never will look right! But these are great to use as gift bags hun - seriously they are really cute

  3. I like them :-) But I don't know enough of sewing to suggest something else ! And I totally get the "like a mad woman" part ..lol - I keep going, going until it works out or I start counting the money I "wrecked" and then I'll stop.

  4. I think they look good, but I do understand wanted them to come out as good as the ones you're modeling them after. This happens to me a lot with baking. Either the recipe tastes good but looks nothing like it's supposed to, or it looks pretty good but I don't like how it tastes.

  5. Seems like they would have mentioned the wrinkles or a way to prevent them. You can't be the only one who got them. Grr. I think the bags are pretty, but if I have wrinkles in my gift bags (mine are store bought, because I'm not crafty, lol) it irks me too.

    Your designs/patterns are cute!

  6. Well, they're pretty darn cute in the picture! I don't have much patience...if I can't get it by the 2nd try, I throw in the towel...

  7. They do look cute, Mel. And I understand your frustrations. Did you try "ironing" them under a thick cloth? Years ago critics claimed a lot of Martha Stewart's projects were impossible to do or that she would leave out important information on the how to. Maybe this is one of them.

  8. They actually don't photograph badly at all. They look good in the pictures (besides for the crumbled birdie one)...they others look like they were successes. I admire that you kept on going. We've been watching Nemo a lot around here so it makes me think of Dory and her advice 'just keep swimming, just keep swimming' :)

  9. They're really cute, Mel!! But I know what you mean. At least 1/3rd to 1/2, maybe 3/4, make that 99% of my projects turn out unlike what I had imagined. That you kept trying is the very best part. Delight, and those papers are really cute, too. I like the colorful one in the middle!

  10. I still think they are cute too! The one on the left doesn't look nearly as wrinkled. I'm guessing there is a little "mad woman" attitude in all of us crafters!

  11. Oh, I think they're gorgeous Mel. Where do you get paper like that from? I don't go into scrapbooking shops but I'm always looking for pretty paper. You're too hard on yourself.

  12. I think you had a great idea, and I know how frustrating it is when that vision you see in your head so clearly doesn't turn out that way in reality. That being said, photography covers a multitude of sins, because the bags look great on my laptop. :) Do you have to turn them inside out? How would they look with the "seams" showing on the outside?

  13. OMG I can't believe that you think this was a fail???? I love them. If I ever get a hold of some vinyl, I know what I will do with it!! I have tons of scrap book paper but I hate scrapbooking. I am pinning this awesome idea.

  14. I think they are a great idea. I think I will try them with clear shelf liner and paper. It is kind of like vinyl and is sticky so it would hold the paper in place. Just put it on both sides. I don't know how well it would do in a sewing machine because it is sticky. Just an idea. Yours are so cute.

  15. You could join them up with duct tape I think that would be cool but this vinyl is the plastic clear version.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, between housework and 5 kids, this is the only thing I get out of bed for ;)
